Dining Hall Hacks

Happy September everyone! We’re very excited to welcome our new and returning students back to campus. Here are some tips and tricks to help you get the best dining hall experience at Queen’s.

Meal Plans are for Upper Year Students Too!

That’s right, our meal plans are not only for our incoming first years, they are offered to all Queen’s student. There are many different meal plan options available –choose a plan that fits you best!

Ask Before You Eat!

Do you have an allergy, dietary restriction, or follow a special diet? We can help! If you haven’t already done so, be sure to book an appointmentwith our Registered Dietitian and/or Campus Executive Chef to discuss how to safely dine on campus.

Plan Ahead!

Check the dining hall menus on our website or Queen’s Dining App to become more familiar with the options. This is a great way to find your favourites and plan on which dining hall you would like to eat at each day. PS each dining hall is on their own 5-week rotation, so each place offers something different!

Just Ask!

Looking to try a sample from a few stations? You can ask for a half portion. Were you looking for more vegetables or other sides? Ask for extra!  Our team is happy to accommodate. If you have any doubts or questions, ask a team member.

Watch for the Mindful Icon!

We’ve made eating well easier for you! Keep an eye out for the yellow apple icon for healthy and delicious items offered at each meal. Mindful is an approach that focuses on transparency of ingredients, delicious food, satisfying portions and clarity in messaging so you can make mindful choices. The icon identifies dishes that meet specific nutrition criteria, including calories, fat, sodium and fibre.

Get Breakfast to Go at Ban Righ Dining Hall

Did you know you could grab Breakfast To Go at Ban Righ Dining hall? If you prefer to eat on the go, just let the cashier at Ban Righ know that you would like Breakfast To Go. Your student card will be swiped for a meal (not a TAM) and you can enter the dining hall to get your coffee/tea/water in your reusable mug. Return to the cashier to grab your breakfast sandwich and fruit and you’re good to go!

Bagged meals are also available when your schedule doesn’t allow enough time to eat in the dining halls. This program is set up in advance, so please ask to speak with the dining hall manager to learn more.

Take Two Trips!

Our dining halls have so much to offer. To help decide, first look at all the options with a quick walk around. Once decided, take a second trip and choose your meals (mix and match if you’d like!)

Feel Good About What You Eat!

Aside from preparing healthy nutritious, and delicious meals, Queen’s Hospitality Services works towards making sure that our culinary practices and dishes are ethical and sustainable. Some of our practices include only using cage free eggs and donating non-perishable food daily to the local Kingston community through Soul Foods and Loving Spoonful. Did you know you can also donate up to 5 meal swipes to a peer in need each semester through our Swipe it Forward program? If you plan to go home for the weekend or plan on eating off campus, donate a meal swipe to a peer in need.

Don’t Forget Your Eco-Container at Jean-Royce Dining Hall!

Have you heard about our new Eco-Container programat Jean Royce? This is a new pilot program aimed to help reduce waste. How it works:

1. Pay a one-time, refundable $5 deposit at the cashier to receive your green carabiner. This will save .25 cents on compostable take-out containers while preventing waste!
2. Next time you order at a food station, hand the food station employee your green carabiner. They will provide your food order in a reusable eco-container.
3.After your meal, return your used eco-container to the cashier. Swap for a new green carabiner for your next meal!
4. The cycle continues! Remember: it’s always one green carabiner for one eco-container.
